In the spirit of Chris Brogan, who was insightful enough to develop and share his 3 Words for 2011 strategy for planning each year, I’ve put together my own three words that reflect how I want to spend my energy over the next 12 months.
Context – Having joined SocialBon early last year, my work has found me visiting Haiti multiple times and will increasingly have me traveling to other parts of the developing world. I’ve been a world traveler for a long time, and every place I visit entails learning about a new culture and a new environment. Thus, I’m going to continue to develop a better context for my visits by studying anthropology and history.
Community – I have the opportunity to meet new people all the time – whether it’s a home in Lexington KY, traveling, on Twitter, or by reading and responding to a blog, there’s always someone new I’m adding to my network. My goal through all of this is to build community by better engaging with others and by connecting my contacts to each other. Being able to leverage the community I’ve built is rewarding, fun, and most importantly, helps me make things happen.
Focus - This is the year I’m going to implement my Stop Doing List (thank you Jim Collins for this insight in “Good to Great” – a superb book if you haven’t read it). Instead of trying to work on anything and everything that I’m interested in, I’m making a real effort to hone in on the actions that are meaningful, relevant, and that I’m skilled at. And getting rid of the fluff helps me focus on delivering. After all, according to Steve Jobs, “real artists ship“.
